A packaging design project whose brief was to design packaging for a product line of any brand, pre-existing or otherwise. I chose to create packaging for colour pencils, inspired by the iconic macaws featured on Faber Castell's watercolour pencil box sets. Two sets were designed for their Classic and Watercolour lines respectively, made to fit their 36 pencil sets.
I designed these boxes with the idea of fun and usability in mind. In a standard pencil box set, the colours are arranged in a pleasing rainbow gradient, but this is often disrupted as children take them out and put them back in their boxes out of the "correct" order. I chose to take this feature and make it a positive one rather than incorrect. Every time the pencils are put back into the box the macaw will end up with a different pattern of feathers, opening the realm of possibility for different combinations of colours.
I also chose to use an animal mascot as the box form as it enhances the play factor for children, inspired by toy-like stationery such as mechanical pencils shaped like injection needles, or food-shaped erasers. Elements of surprise were incorporated such as using the beak to house the pencil sharpener included in all Faber Castell colour pencil sets.
