Kusu Island

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

My other dining set that is part of my Final Year Project, this set is based on the Singapore folk tale of Kusu Island, where a giant turtle appeared to save two drowning sailors and became the island it is named for. I based the pattern of another iconic Singaporean food, angkukueh. The Singapore version of the angkukueh mainly eaten is Peranakan, a blending of Malay and Chinese culture which is a nod back to the two sailors in the legend and the subsequent presence of both a Malay and a Chinese shrine on the island itself. It also represents an important aspect of migrant life, as it symbolises the cohabitation of different cultures represented on the island through the Malay and Chinese shrines that were built there. Put together, the bowl and the plate both join to form the shape of a turtle.
